Summer Safety Tips for Children and Parents

Summer is a fun-filled season for kids, but it is also the time of year they are most likely to end up in the emergency room with an injury. They play outside more often than other times of year and have increased exposure to the sun, insects, and contaminated food and water. They spend more time riding bicycles and skateboards, swimming in backyard pools or lakes, sitting around campfires and backyard barbecues, lighting fireworks and playing near lawnmowers. Additionally, outdoor toys can collect bacteria and become damaged or chipped.

With the slew of recent toy recalls and the increased risk of injury during the summer months, it is important to be vigilant about safety and to review your safety measures.

Sun Exposure

For babies under 6 months it is important to avoid sun exposure. Be sure to dress infants in lightweight long pants, long-sleeved shirts and wide brimmed hats - cover the arms, legs and neck. Apply a small amount of sunscreen to any exposed skin such as the face, hands and back of the neck. If an infant becomes sunburned, apply cold compresses.

For children, be sure to apply sunscreen to any exposed skin 30 minutes before they go outside. Dress them in cotton clothing and have them wear hats with a brim and sunglasses. Try to limit their exposure to sun, especially during the peak hours between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Be sure to reapply sunscreen every two hours and after swimming or sweating.

Heat Exhaustion

When the humidity and heat are highest, it is best to limit intense activities to 15 minutes or less. You can gradually increase activity time over a two-week period as children acclimate to the summer heat. Have your children drink cold water or non-carbonated beverages every 20 minutes, even if they are not thirsty. Dress them in lightweight, light-colored clothing and change wet or sweaty clothes.

Pool Safety

If you have a swimming pool, you should install a gated fence four feet high around the area to prevent young children from falling into the water. Never leave children playing in the pool unattended, and be sure to keep rescue equipment, such as a shepherd's hook and life vests, in an accessible location. Have a telephone nearby in case of emergencies.

Insect Safety

Do not wash your children with scented soaps or shampoos. Bright clothes and flower patterns or floral scents can attract insects. Do not let your children play near stagnant bodies of water, flowerbeds or food gardens. Have them wear insect repellent to protect against ticks and mosquitoes when playing near woods or fields. Never allow children to play in any agricultural area that may have used pesticides. Insect repellents containing DEET are not recommended for very young children. Do not use repellents containing over 30 percent DEET on any child. Organic sprays are available on the market, and natural repellents can be made by soaking garlic or peppermint in water. Growing herbs such as thyme, rosemary, lavender, fennel and marjoram can help protect your backyard from mosquitoes.

Playground Safety

All playgrounds should have loose-fill materials such as sand, woodchips or bark maintained to a depth of at least 9 inches. Equipment should not have exposed S-hooks or protruding bolts. All swings should be made of soft materials such as rubber, soft plastic or canvas. Never attach children to ropes, lines or leashes that could strangle the child. Children on playground equipment should be supervised at all times.

Bicycle Safety

Stick with coaster brakes and training wheels until your child is experienced enough to handle hand brakes and two wheels. Shop for bicycles with your child so he can try out a bike beforehand, making sure that it is the right size and a comfortable fit. Oversized bikes are especially dangerous to inexperienced riders. Make sure your child wears a bicycle helmet at all times. Driveways and sidewalks near the house are just as dangerous as roadways and bike paths. Lead by example and always wear a helmet and use proper bicycle safety when riding with your children.

Skateboard and In-Line Skate Safety

Children should never ride skateboards or use skates near traffic or roadways. Make sure children wear protective equipment, pads and a helmet at all times.

Lawnmower Safety

Always use a mower that has a safety handle that stops the engine if the handle is let go. Children under 12 years should not use lawn equipment. Make sure anyone using a lawn mower wears protective hearing equipment and eye protection. Clear the lawn of any rocks, stones or toys before any mowing begins. Always wear sturdy shoes, never sandals. Be sure that the blades come to a full stop and engine is turned off before unclogging the machine.

Toy Safety

New federal safety rules and measures were passed in 2007 after a rash of toy recalls. In April of 2010, however, the Consumer Product Safety Commission granted many toy manufacturers the right to do their own in-house testing of products. The senior director of product safety at the Consumers Union, Don Mays, questioned the decision, saying, "There is the potential for conflict of interest... it's a bit like the fox guarding the henhouse."

There is now the increased possibility of toys being recalled after they have already reached the marketplace. Before you buy a toy, be sure to read the labels and warnings on the package. Check the toy and make sure there are no parts that can be swallowed or cause choking. Be sure that toys do not have any sharp edges or points that can cut or puncture the skin. Do not buy young children any toys that use electricity or have mixable liquids or chemicals.

Be sure to monitor your children's toys for recalls. You can call the Consumer Product Safety Commission at 301-504-0580 and request a copy of their report on unsafe and recalled items, or you can visit CPSC's Web site. The U.S. Public Interest Research Group also compiles a report on toy safety; you can request a copy by calling 202-546-9707.

If one of your child's toys is recalled, you should take it from him or her immediately. If you have concern that the toys may have been contaminated with lead, you should take your child to the doctor for a checkup and have his or her blood tested. If the blood test shows high lead levels, be sure to take photographs of the toy, including any bite marks, and contact a personal injury attorney.

The Importance of Safety

The effects of brain or head trauma, disease or lead poisoning can have devastating consequences on your child's health. Taking extra safety precautions and inspecting your children's play areas, toys and equipment can prevent a lifetime of hardship. With outdated playground equipment, unregulated toy manufacturers and the increased chance of injury from summer activities, it is important to remain vigilant when it comes to safety. Take a few moments to review your safety measures before your next vacation or family outing.

Mattresses For People With Back Problems

Your back is one of the most important assets you have in your life. Without it, you cannot function properly and even your mental state might suffer from it. Experts on sleep study all press on the importance of a full night's sleep. This sleep can be hindered if you have back problems, and especially if the back problem arises from back bedding. Getting a quality bedding is not just a financial issue, it's almost a matter of life and death.

Sealy Posturepedic Full Size Mattress

The markets these days are flooded with different types of mattresses, tailored to every persons specific needs. This means that it is a lot of problem wading through all the various bedding choices, but it also means it's a great chance that your specific perfect mattress might be out there waiting for you. Sealy Posturepedic Full Size Mattress

Pros and Cons of the Tempur-Pedic Mattress

As unbelievable as it sounds, the story of how the Tempur-pedic mattress came to be starts at NASA. That's correct...the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. During the Sixties, NASA was trying to create a material that would help lower the effects from g-forces that astronauts have to deal with. In the end, the called this advanced product "temper foam".

Sealy Posturepedic Full Size Mattress

Since NASA never put the material to use they decided to release the formula so various private companies could use it in their products. Unfortunately, at this time the process for developing the foam was not complete, making it impractical and hard to produce.

Sealy Posturepedic Full Size Mattress

However, a group of Swedish scientists working for Fagerdala World Foams saw the potential application of the material for use in mattresses. These scientists spent over a decade along with millions of dollars of their own money developing an entirely new type of sleep surface. They called the temperature sensitive material they created "TEMPUR" and a little while later they had it patented.

The production process of a Tempur-Pedic mattress is somewhat complicated. It involves putting together different memory foam layers along with other commonly used materials in a mattress. The final result of this process is a quality bed that's comfortable and has better support than regular innerspring mattresses.

How can this be done? It starts with the top layer or comfort layer that has a softer TEMPUR material designed to adjust to your unique body shape. It conforms to your size and weight. After lying down you sink further into the second layer which is the support layer. It absorbs your weight and redistributes it evenly over the surface of the bed.

Last comes the base layer. It's the strongest because it must provide a solid foundation for the bed. This layer usually isn't made of memory foam but rather less costly and higher density polyurethane foam is used here.

The biggest difference between a Tempur-Pedic mattress and all the others is that they're specifically designed to respond to changes in both weight and temperature. This means it can be either soft or firm depending what you need. The material can actually conform to your unique body dimensions, which gives you necessary support in the right places. These mattresses are especially helpful for people with back and neck problems, as study after study has confirmed.

Something you should be aware of is that a regular mattress won't distribute weight evenly. This is the reason that the part of the bed you lay upon starts to sag. Continuous pressure on the same spot all of the time will eventually stop the mattress from supporting. Most of the time, the hips and lower back are the worst places causing your spine to be in the wrong position. Normal mattresses commonly aggravate a prior condition such as a bad back.

Another advantage with a Tempur-Pedic mattress is that they're nearly maintenance free. You don't have to flip them or really do anything for them. They'll never develop body impressions or start poking you with springs, which means they can last up to twice as long as an average mattress. In fact, the company currently offers a 20-year limited warranty on all of their mattresses. So, if you have a bad back, neck, poor circulation or just want a good mattress that will last you at least two decades, this may be the brand for you.

It's important to remember however, that a Tempur-Pedic mattress isn't for everyone. They're very different from a coiled spring mattress and may take some getting used to. While the majority of people report coming to like them after a short period, some never do and have to switch back to a regular mattress. Common complaints include the mattress being too firm, having an unpleasant chemical odor, or retaining too much heat and causing the user to wake up sweaty.

Fortunately, a close look at Tempur-Pedic mattress reviews shows that these problems are fairly rare so you probably shouldn't worry too much about them. If you're having trouble sleeping, or are waking up in the morning with aches and pains caused by your current mattress, then it's definitely worth trying one out to see if it can help.

Manage Your Chronic Pain While Traveling in Comfortable Hotels

If you have a chronic condition, such as fibromyalgia or arthritis, making the effort to travel can leave you feeling exhausted and ready to crash on a comfortable bed like you'd find in those cute little bed and breakfasts. But until recently, those with chronic illnesses often found a hard bed and few comforts of home. But this is changing fast.

Sealy Posturepedic Full Size Mattress

If you're like me, (I have fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis) I always sit down on the bed to see just how hard it is and that determines if I'm going to find the closest Target and buy an "egg carton crate foam mattress that I just leave when I check out. The beds nearly always feel like a slab of cement. I avoid actually touching the bedspread (they don't wash them too frequently) and then begin my calls to the front desk. "I need three more pillows." If they don't have them I try to roll up towels to prop my shoulders into the right place.

Sealy Posturepedic Full Size Mattress

Thankfully, hotels figured out that everyone likes comfort. (Well, nearly everyone. A few have complained about "what do I do with all these pillows?") The first "hotel bed wars" began over six years ago as Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. rolled out their Westin Heavenly Bed which became so popular guests insisted on taking it home. Then Hilton Hotels announced a billion effort that includes the addition of its branded Serenity Bed, signature mattress pads, down pillows, linens, decorative bed pillows and bolsters. Their web site hiltontohome.com sells everything from The Hilton Family Exclusive Clock Radio to a showerhead (Hilton sisters not included.)

Sheraton's popular Sweet Sleeper Bed, the Four Comfort Bed is a multi-layered, 'cozy cocoon.' The four key comfort points are: a deluxe 11.5" Sealy Posturepedic Plush Top Sleep System featuring a 9-inch high Shock Abzzorber(R) foundation; four large luxurious pillows including two feather/down and two Euro Square lounging pillows; a decorative and inviting cushioned duvet; and, crisp cotton blend sheets. In late 2003, free high-speed Internet access was added, upgraded bathroom products and (gasp!) complimentary bottled water.

I recently has the privilege to stay in a the downtown Denver Marriott and found 300-thread-count sheets, a feathered mattress topper, stylish pillow shams, a decorative bed scarf and (yippee!) extra pillows! I believe I counted eight. I had just purchased my travel version of the Cuddle Ewe, a special mattress for those with fibromyalgia, but Marriott's bed felt so good I thought I'd forgo the Cuddle Ewe (until 3 a.m. when I got up and put it on the bed). But truth be told, my family makes fun of me that I am like the princess who can feel the pea in her bed under fifteen mattresses. The bedspreads have been replaced by pretty white covers which are washed and a colorful "bed scarf." (Half a blanket that adds some color to the foot of the bed.)

And those bath supplies you can never squeeze out of those teeny tiny bottles? I actually was able to squeeze out the conditioner and took home my extras. Glancing through the catalog, displayed prominently on the bedside table, I saw I could order the 10-ounce size of Orange Ginger Aromatherapy Body Wash for just .50. Not bad considering it's by Bath & Body Works. Or if that lamp caught my attention, or even the shower curtain rings, they too could be mine for an extra charge.

Most hotels do their best to be accommodating to those with chronic illness. You can ask for a complimentary refrigerator for your room if you need it to store medication that must be kept cold. If they don't have one available, you can ask them to store it downstairs in their own refrigeration, but you may be safer with an ice bucket.

When you make reservations, ask for a room near the elevator so you don't have to walk too far. You may want to be close (or not close) to places like the pool, ice maker and internet "café." If you need a disabled-friendly room, don't be afraid to ask. You may be able to get a walk-in shower and raised toilet seat with hand rails.

Small hotels without concierge service will bring your bags up to your room as a service. And if carrying luggage through an airport is difficult, you may be interested in LuggageExpress. They provide luggage transportation services by collecting travelers' luggage from home, hotel or business and delivering it to the end destination. The baggage flies on a separate independent flight, is in the hotel room when the traveler checks in, and is returned on a separate flight to home. See http://www.usxpluggageexpress.com . Another new service is Avis Rent A Car System's pilot program where customers can rent a mobility scooter and have it waiting in the trunk of their next rental vehicle or delivered to the customer's location, the first program in the industry. The program starts in Las Vegas and Orlando.

Hotels are coming up with all kinds of interesting perks these days to lure customers to their business. For example at Cherry Valley Lodge near Columbus, Ohio you can get the "MenoPause Escape." The package is 0 for two women sharing a double which includes a fan and cooling pillow, 30-minute massage and bottle of wine.

What do I really want? A soft bed, lots of pillows, a reading light that won't wake up the rest of the room, something that drowns out the snoring of my guests who are sleeping soundly, and a bowl of soup that cost considerably less than .95. Oh, and an alarm clock I can actually figure out how to set and a remote control I can work. Until then, I'll stick with my Cuddle Ewe, my grocery bag of sugar-free snacks, and hotels that have Starbucks nearby.

Review of Soft Sleeper 5.5 Pound Memory Foam Mattress Pad-Topper

The Soft Sleeper mattress pad is made of 5.5 pound density memory foam. The product upon being new needs a few hours to decompress and expand to its full size.

Sealy Posturepedic Full Size Mattress

Memory foam material reacts to your body's weight and temperature to reduce pressure points and thereby improve comfort and perhaps even quality of sleep. Owners of memory foam toppers and mattresses also report that they experience less pain, such as back, shoulder and hip discomfort.

Sealy Posturepedic Full Size Mattress

Owners of this product can expect to have many of the same downsides that virtually any memory foam topper owner would have. For instance, the memory foam for some people may act as a heat trap, capturing one's body heat and then not releasing it. The result can be a sleeping surface that is too warm for comfort.

In addition, some off gassing may occur with this product. Off gassing is the giving off of a chemical-like odor when the topper is new. The smell usually wears off after a few days, but sometimes it takes longer. And with virtually any brand of mattress or mattress topper, you may experience sagging of the product within a fairly short amount of time. Overall, however, memory foam generally has good longevity and durability, especially memory foam of higher density such as the Soft Sleeper.

How does the Soft Sleeper compare to the more expensive Tempurpedic brand? Some people may not notice much, if any, of a difference at all. However, some may think that the overall quality and pain relieving properties of the Tempurpedic are superior.

The Soft Sleeper should surely be considered if you have a mattress that has seen better days and you seek to improve its comfort. Sometimes a topper / pad is all that's needed to get a few more good years out of your existing mattress.

The Right Bed Frame Support For Your New Mattress Set

You've spent weeks shopping for just the right mattress set at just the right price, and you have finally found the one that is not too firm, not too soft, but just right. That's great news, Goldilocks! Now, it is time to shift your attention to what is under your bed and examine your bed frame.

Sealy Posturepedic Full Size Mattress

Often the excitement of getting a new mattress set overshadows the reality that your new mattress requires proper support. You will enjoy a longer comfort life on your new mattress if you make sure it has the right support.

How can you be sure that your new mattress set has the right support?
If your bed frame is metal and it is over 10 years old, make sure there is no squeaking or rattling when you roll over on the bed. Squeaking and rattling may indicate that your bed frame has weakened over time. It is probably a good idea to replace your bed frame if this is the case. Sometimes, mattress stores will give you a free bed frame with your purchase of a mattress set. Usually, this is the cheapest, least supportive bed frame available. You're better off asking for an upgraded deluxe model bed frame and paying for it. These last longer and are more supportive than the "free" ones most stores offer.

If you have a wooden bed frame with wooden slats, make sure the slats are not bowing in the middle. Also, wooden slats are not enough for queen and king size bedding; you need at least one leg to the floor for queen size and two legs for king size. You can make a leg by having a piece of wood cut to the correct length at your local hardware store. Many companies offer metal center support slats that are far superior to wood slats. For the best possible support, choose a metal support designed for use with wood beds.

Following are some guidelines to follow for ensuring the proper support for your new mattress set: You need at least one rigid center support bar with one leg to the floor for queen size bedding and at least two rigid center support bars with legs to the floor for king size.   Wood center support slats should be at least 3/4 inch plywood.  If yours are not at least 3/4 inch plywood, consider a metal bed slat system like a Strong Arm, Bed Beam, or Bed Bridge support system.  Twin and full size beds do not usually require additional center supports, but with the extra heavy weight of today's bedding, it sure wouldn't hurt to add a center support bar. Refer to your mattress manufacturer's warranty card for detailed information about what support is required.

Using an Air Bed As Your Main Bed

There are many benefits to owning an air bed. Most people think they are for use only when camping or if you have an extra guest over for the night. While this is the typical use of them, there are some who prefer to sleep every night on an air bed. Before you call them crazy, let's look into why this might actually be a viable method for some people to catch their nightly Z's.

Sealy Posturepedic Full Size Mattress

First of all, I know of no other bed which can be so adjustable to your exact comfort needs as an air bed. At least at this price range you won't find one. Yes, you can spend thousands of dollars on a Sealy Posturepedic or another type of mattress you see on late-night infomercials. I can't deny this but you can't deny that that is a costly way to go. It's nice to dream about but we all can't afford that expensive of a mattress.

Sealy Posturepedic Full Size Mattress

The fact is that an air bed can be blown up or deflated to the exact specifications that you have. If you want a very firm sleep, you can inflate it all the way so that it's like sleeping on wooden boards. Or if you like to sink down into your mattress you can just simply not blow it up all the way.

Can you do that with a regular mattress? No, I don't think so. However it comes from the manufacturer is how you're supposed to live with it. I've never quite understood how we're expected to get a good feel for a mattress just by lying on it in a crowded and busy mall. Half the time people find out that they've made the wrong decision only after they've brought it home and slept on it for a full night. This can be quite a costly and uncomfortable mistake.

While I believe that air beds are still most appropriate for occasional use, I definitely feel that for some they are the best daily mattress. Is this you? I don't know. Just ask yourself if you have enjoyed the nights' sleep you have gotten on an air bed in the past. If the answer is yes then this may be the best choice for your main bed. If it doesn't work out, well at least you haven't spent an arm and a leg finding that out. Plus, you can just recycle it into an occasionally used item.
